Mary Jane Socks - June 2012

I'm really liking this sock thing!  As a result of a post about socks one lady started talking about some Mary Jane style socks she used to have.  That conversation lead to a special order request.  I am glad I worked this pair out.  It helped me realize I have more sock abilities and understanding that I originally thought!  Now, all I need to do is break away from the stockinette stitch and add repeating patterns to them.

The two pictures above are the first attempt at the Mary Jane pattern from a book I bought.  They turned out much smaller than women's 6-9 shoe size so I deemed them to be "kid's size."

Below are two pictures of the adult sized Mary Jane socks.  I altered the pattern so it would work out better for me.  The difference between the two bottom pictures is that the first one is only the finished yarn work.  The second has the embellishments and bottom-side grippies (not shown).  In other words, the bottom pair are truly finished.  If only I had a model for them!  I think it would be great to see these Mary Jane socks where they belong... on someone's feet!

I hope you enjoyed the post today!

Blessings and Peace!

School Pride Warmth Set Plus Bag - June 2012

My first official School Pride Warmth Set!  And it was ordered with a matching bag!

While I was in Texas to move my sister out to Washington state I showed off some pictures and my aunt placed an order.  This purple and Gold set is for Pecos High School in Pecos, Texas.  Go EAGLES!

Sewing Patches - June 2012

A personal side note: putting my basic sewing skills to use.  Four uniforms with four patches each at a normal price of $3 per patch to sew them on saves us about $48 (or more) with me sewing them on myself.  This is the reason I learned to sew in the first place.  When Justin and I were first married, that $48 was a much bigger deal.  Today, it's nice to know I still have the skills even though we could easily have someone else do the work.  God is good.  =-)

Socks - May 2012

As you can see, I have completed a pair of basic knit socks... that fit my feet!  This is a huge accomplishment to me because I have been working on socks for a while now.  I still need to iron out a few things on the socks I started a while back and obviously haven't finished yet.  I have tried several techniques for making socks including crochet, bosnian crochet, and knit.  So far, in my humble opinion, this has been the most successful pair for both aesthetics and fit.  The close second (thus far) has been the hand crocheted socks from a few months ago.  My next goal is to make socks that will fit a larger foot based on the same pattern.  After that, I will experiment with various design patterns.  I look forward to popcorn socks, eyelets, and cables!

The neat part about hand-knit socks is they are incredibly warm!  Even without being tossed in the dryer first!

Now it's off to work on some special order projects!

Blessings and Peace!

Viking Helmet and Mask - May 2012

A while back a friend of mine from church showed me a picture of a viking helmet and mask.  He asked if I could make something like it, but it was just a curiosity.  More recently he asked if I could make it for real.  So I did.  Here is the finished product!

Above: the crocheted hat and mask.
Below: modeled by my friend Jerry.

I adapted a hat pattern from a book my sister gave me in order to make the helmet and horn.  From there, I crocheted the mask base.  Once each of those pieces was made I strung the yarn and tied it to the base for the beard.  The mask/beard is attached to the helmet/hat by two buttons on the inside so the hat can be worn separately from the beard.

I hope you enjoyed this little random request!

Blessings and Peace!

Pieces and Parts - May 2012

I'm sure you remember the School Pride Warmth Sets I talked about last time.  Now here are the personalization pieces and parts I will eventually add to the scarves.  The first picture is the original set options for Bremerton High School (Stripes and Cables Hat, Bumblebee Stripes Fingerless Mitts, and Bumblebee Striped Scarf with blue border).

Next, we have the color combinations for three of the local high schools (including Bremerton High School [BHS]).  The characters below include both numbers and letters as well as a "number sign" for more versatility.  I'm looking forward to personalizing the scarves with peoples initials, school abbreviations, and jersey numbers.

Stay tuned for more scarves, hats, fingerless mitts, and much, much more!

I hope you enjoyed this post!  If there any color combinations you would like to see, please feel free to request them:

School Pride Warmth Set Follow Up - May 2012

So the one of the ladies from our church's business prayer meeting said she might have a mutual opportunity for some girls and me.  The idea is these girls would make a profit off of selling my items to people as a fundraiser.  I don't have all the details yet, I was only recently offered the idea.  With this in mind I crocheted up some samples.

My first two samples (above and below) are based on filet crochet style.  These are altered to have two stitch by one row squares instead of three stitch by one row squares.  Filet crochet is most easily read from a chart.  It is harder to see the designs in this particular yarn-hook combination (worsted weight yarn with H hook) than many of the other filet crochet samples I have seen.  I believe it would work better with a smaller hook.  But that will be an experiment for another day.

The second set of samples (above and below) is based on Fair Isle crochet.  By using two colors in each row, working one color, holding the other color still, and switching colors in pattern, the pattern pops out much more readily than my previous attempts (filet crochet).  Again, Fair Isle crochet is best read from charts.  I used Bremerton High School colors for (above) gold on blue and (below) blue on gold samples.

Following are three swashes for the body of the scarf or fingerless mitts.  The first swash is plain stripes with no border.  Second is stripes with a blue border.  And third is plain stripes with a yellow border.

I have not finalized the options I want to make available as of yet.  I will be contacting the lady from church and asking her input as well as feedback from several other sources.

Peace and Blessings!

School Pride Warmth Set - May 2012

Using the Fingerless Mitts in blue and gold as a springboard, the School Pride Warmth Set sets the stage for more possibilities!  Below is one possible combination of hat, scarf, and mitts.

Above: The final piece in the three-piece set, a striped scarf with blue border.
Below: The original three piece set in blue and gold.

With this as a model, I plan to make hats, scarves, mitts, and School Pride Warmth sets by order.  Stay tuned for more specialized options coming soon!

What are your school colors?

Peace, Blessings, and God Bless!!

Stripes and Cables Hat - April 2012

One more project completed!  Stripes and Cables hat in blue and gold to go with the Fingerless Mitts in blue and gold.  Next up: a blue and gold scarf.  Once I have all the pieces, I'll be able to show them in a set.  I'm looking forward to doing other color combinations for the hats, scarves, mitts, and sets as well.  The blue and gold theme is due to a mom who found out I make fingerless mitts and requested a pair in her kid's school colors.  She's apparently very active in her son's sports team and wants to show school spirit!

Stay tuned for more!

Peace and Blessings to you all!

Fingerless Mitts in black and white - April 2012

All right!  I told you I'd be stuck on the fingerless mitts thing for a while.  Here's another pair!  This pair is made from Angel Hair yarns (found at JoAnn's Fabrics and Crafts), one skein of white and one skein of black.  I didn't actually use all of both skeins, in fact it is reasonable to make an pair of fingerless mitts from one skein.  So, I have the option of making another set of black and white fingerless mitts from the same two skeins.  Yay!  The stripes aren't exactly my favorite design but I do like the stripes pretty well.  These went up on my Facebook page for sale today (April 26, 2012).

I hope you all enjoyed this new project!  Look forward to more posts and more types of projects coming soon!  I have a scarf and a hat in line along with a pair of socks.  Plus there are a few sets I have in mind, including a set with a hat, mitts, and socks and a set with hat, scarf, and mitts.  Plus, there will be dish cloths and other household items to come!

God Bless and goodnight!!
